Lecce is an excellent base for exploring Puglia without a car. One of the easiest options is to use Trenitalia Regional trains running along the Adriatic railway between Lecce and Bari, which connect several of the region’s most attractive towns. In this article we will explore which location you can reach from Lecce using the Trenitalia trains without need to rent a car.
Polignano a Mare and Monopoli

For a coastal day trip, Polignano a Mare is one of the most popular choices. Famous for its dramatic cliffs, sea views and compact historic centre, it can be reached directly from Lecce on selected regional trains without changing in Bari.
Nearby Monopoli is another particularly convenient option. The railway station is within walking distance of the historic centre, old harbour and seafront, making it easy to explore independently. Both towns work well as full-day destinations, and travellers can even combine them.
Ostuni and Brindisi

Ostuni, the famous “White City”, is also directly connected with Lecce by regional trains. The railway station is outside the hilltop historic centre, so an additional local bus or taxi ride is normally needed, but it remains a straightforward day trip.
Even closer to Lecce is Brindisi, ideal for travellers interested in history, Roman heritage and a relaxed waterfront. It is one of the main stops on the Lecce–Bari railway and therefore one of the simplest destinations to reach by train. Also, Brindisi offer many shopping opportunities thanks to the Brin Park mall, Ipercoop/Le Colonne mall and Decathon reachable by local bus from the train station, making it an ideal solution for a “shopping day”.
Bari and destinations farther north
Bari is the final stop of the regional train and it worth the trip itself thank to its lovely Basilica of San Nicola, seafront and food scene. It is also a useful transport hub for continuing farther north.
From Bari, travellers can change to another regional train towards Giovinazzo, Molfetta, Bisceglie, Trani or Barletta. Trani is especially rewarding for a day trip thanks to its elegant harbour and spectacular Romanesque cathedral beside the sea. Regional services on the Adriatic line connect Bari with these towns, making a same-day return to Lecce possible with some advance planning.
For selected destinations farther north, it is also worth checking direct Intercity or Frecciarossa services from Lecce rather than changing in Bari. For example, current Frecciarossa services from Lecce include stops such as Barletta and Foggia, although stops and schedules vary depending on the train and season.

Finally, travellers who prefer the Salento coast can use seasonal train-and-bus Link services from Lecce to reach destinations such as Otranto and Porto Cesareo, offering another practical way to explore the region without renting a car.
Tip: Always check the Trenitalia timetable for your travel date, as regional, high-speed and seasonal bus connections can change throughout the year.
